The Best Time to Buy: a Month-by-Month Deal Calendar
Half of saving money is timing. Here’s when each thing actually goes on sale.
The short version: buy TVs around the Super Bowl and Black Friday, electronics & fitness gear in January, mattresses & furniture around Memorial Day and Labor Day, appliances in September–October, and almost everything on Black Friday / Cyber Monday. Below is the month-by-month version.
Month by month
January — TVs (pre–Super Bowl), fitness gear and activewear (New Year), winter clothing clearance, and last season’s electronics as new models arrive.
February — TVs peak before the Super Bowl; winter clearance deepens; Presidents’ Day brings appliance and mattress sales.
March–April — spring cleaning gear, vacuums, and luggage (before summer travel); winter sports clearance.
May — Memorial Day is one of the best weekends for mattresses, furniture, and large appliances; grills and patio.
June–July — Amazon Prime Day (mid-July) drags the whole market into sale mode; great for electronics and home. Summer clothing starts to clear.
August — back-to-school (laptops, supplies, dorm goods); summer clearance.
September–October — appliances (new models land), patio furniture clearance, and early holiday-tech teasers.
November — Black Friday / Cyber Monday: the deepest, broadest discounts of the year across nearly every category. The one month to wait for if you can.
December — holiday deals continue; after the 25th, wrapping, decor, and winter clothing hit clearance.
How to not overpay
If a big sale event is within a few weeks, wait. If not, check the price history (so you don’t fall for a fake “sale” — see our fake-discount guide), and set the item aside until the right window. The only exception is genuine Clearance on something you already want — that won’t wait.
